Company History

Alabama Lock & Key originated in 1936 when Dan Roegner opened a retail store in the heart of downtown Birmingham, Alabama to sell locksmith services and sporting goods. After a few years Dan Roegner retired and passed ownership of the business to his son Charles Roegner, who decided it was in his best interests to close the store; he saw a more promising business opportunity providing locksmith services as a sole proprietor out of his home in Norwood, an area in the vicinity of Birmingham. With the aid of his mother, who provided part-time bookkeeping and administrative services for the business, Charles Roegner was able to offer his customers a useful service while gaining valuable experience as a locksmith.

In 1963 Charles Roegner, along with his son Ron Roegner, formed a partnership to open a new retail store in the downtown Birmingham area specializing in locksmith products. They named the business Alabama Lock & Key Company and it proved a success. The newly formed father and son partnership enjoyed excellent sales growth and subsequently expanded into new service and product lines.

Charles Roegner left the partnership in 1969 and sold his equity interests to his son, giving Ron Roegner full ownership of Alabama Lock & Key. Six years later the Company had grown to 28 employees, and operations moved to 1325 Third Avenue South in Birmingham, Alabama. Alabama Lock & Key established a reputation as a leading regional provider of locksmith products and financial industry equipment installation and services.

In 2001 the Company moved to its current facility at 1800 Green Springs Highway in Birmingham and grew to 33 employees. Today the company continues to grow through excellent sales and service.

The Company is made up of 3 divisions, servicing many residential and commercial customers. The Inside Locksmith Division is the retail arm from the Company’s walk-in counter and security products showroom. Products in this division include key cutting, general locksmith merchandise, door hardware and safes. The locksmith services provided in this division include re-keying and repairing locks. This division is also a source of support for the Outside Locksmith Division.

The Outside Locksmith Division provides an array of locksmith services to commercial, industrial, retail and residential clients in the five-county metropolitan area of Birmingham, Alabama. The service functions include re-keying locks; installing access control systems, deadbolts, door locks, panic devices, master key systems and high-security locking systems; and performing automotive lock work.

The Financial Division provides sales, service and installation of equipment for customer convenience and security for financial institutions. The products offered and installed include vaults and vault doors, access control system hardware, currency lockers, digital video systems, automated teller machines (ATM’s), safe deposit boxes, drive-in systems; remote banking; teller counter equipment and alarm systems. Alabama Lock & Key also provides service and customer support to these institutions.

In May of 2008 Mr. Roegner retired and sold the company to a partnership formed within the company. As the company continues to chart a course into the future, it strives to serve its customers as an industry leading locksmith and security partner.
